Advantages of a ball valve

At the moment, ball valves are becoming increasingly popular. This is primarily due to their convenience and practicality. In addition, when operating a ball valve, there is no need to change the gasket in the event of a leak, since the principle of operation of such valves is fundamentally different from conventional ones.

The basis of ball valves is a metal ball located inside. When the tap is in the working position, the ball turns to allow water to pass through, but when turning 90 degrees, the water supply is completely stopped due to the ball blocking the place of its exit.

Disadvantages of ball valves

Despite the many advantages, the ball valve has some disadvantages. One of them is that various kinds of salt deposits can form on the surface of the ball. In turn, this may lead to the inability to close the crane or, at least, various difficulties in the implementation of this process. This is explained by the fact that salt deposits that accumulate on the surface of the ball reduce the distance between it and the walls of the tap, due to which the ball is blocked when the tap is closed. To prevent this situation, you need to turn the tap at least a couple of times a month (open and close), so that salt deposits do not accumulate on the surface of the ball. This is especially true for cranes that are installed on hot water systems.

In addition, certain difficulties may arise due to the use of rusty water. So, the sand and scale contained in the rust begin to accumulate on the surface of the ball. Because of this leakage could be present even if the tap will be closed. In addition, water may start to flow from under the oil seal. In some models of cranes, the oil seal can be tightened, but it can also be covered with rust and will scroll along with the nut. And as for those cranes where there is no oil seal at all, they can only be thrown out if this kind of damage occurs, since they are not subject to repair.

In addition, ball valves can not be installed in conditions where the ambient temperature falls below zero, because in such conditions, the water can simply freeze and cause the valve to break.

Recommendations for proper installation of the ball valve.

To properly install the ball valve on the pipe, you must perform a series of sequential steps:

  1. The first step is to remove the old tap from the pipe. After that, you need to check the strength of the thread and count the number of turns. It often happens that after removing the old tap, it is found that part of the thread has rotted and needs to be added. At the same time, the minimum allowed number of complete turns is 4.
  1. If when removing the old tap, it is established that the thread is not damaged and the number of turns corresponds to the minimum, you can fasten the new tap. However, before doing this, you must first process the thread using a die. This will remove debris and rust particles from it.
  1. First you need to try installing a new tap without flax. If it is found that the number of full revolutions is 4-5 pieces, you need to remove the tap and re-wind it for the same number of revolutions, but using flax.
  1. If the tap is installed on the heating system, the first step is to cut the pipe in the right place. To do this, you need to mark the pipe, determine the installation location of the future crane, then cut off part of the pipe, screw the thread and install the crane. At the same time, the minimum number of revolutions remains the same as when installing the tap on the water supply system.

 If you have a centralized heating system, then it is better to use ball valves "SVK". Many years of experience have shown that they are the most suitable for use in such heating systems. The only point that I would like to pay attention to is that it is advisable in such cases to purchase valves with an oil seal, since in case of problems they can be repaired. If the oil seal is missing, the only option in such cases is only to replace the tap.

Modern ball valves "SVK" are divided into the following types:

  • Having only internal threads on both sides;
  • Having only external (external) threads on both sides;
  • Having both types of threads (on one side is the internal, and on the other – the external);
  • Having an internal thread on one side and an American – style thread on the other.

 Based on this classification, when buying a crane, you need to determine which type you need. At the same time, if we are talking about installing a crane in a new place, it must first be determined. The ideal option is to choose a place from which the crane will be convenient to use.

If the conditions do not allow you to choose the most convenient place to install the crane, then it should be determined so that you can at least reach the crane without extra effort. At the same time, you need to pay attention to how the handle is located on the tap and how long it should be. This is especially true for a tight space, where the handle can not always be turned and set at a certain degree.

Determining the characteristics of the crane when it is selected.

Most often, coupling ball valves are installed in domestic conditions. The principle of their operation is approximately the same as that of the coupling (in fact, this is why they are called so). There is another type of faucet – flanged, but they are used in water systems with a pipe diameter of less than 4 centimeters. For this reason, such cranes are rarely used in homes. As for the choice of a coupling valve, it must match the pipe diameter (otherwise it will simply be impossible to install it).

The main diameters of the pipes used in the apartments.

In domestic conditions, pipes of the following diameters are most often used:

- 10 mm (3/8 in).

- 15 mm (1/2 inch)

- 20 mm (3/4 in).

- 25 mm (1 inch);

- 32 mm (1.5 in).

If you are installing a crane for the first time, you can use a ruler to determine the pipe diameter. The only condition is that the diameter on the taps is measured in inches, so you will have to convert centimeters to inches. Make this. in principle, it is not difficult. After that, write down the data in some place so that you can show it to the seller. If you previously had no experience in installing and choosing cranes, the seller will tell you everything.

Determining the thread type when selecting a tap.

All taps contain only 2 main types of thread – internal and external. At the same time, there are models with the same thread at both ends, and there are models with different threads. Before choosing a tap, you need to determine what kind of thread you have on the pipes. If you do not pay attention to this, you risk buying a tap with the wrong type of thread, which you will not be able to install for sure.

Influence of the direction of water movement on the choice of tap.

On some models of cranes "SVK" there is an arrow. Its purpose indicates the direction in which water (or other liquid) should move along this tap. These models should only be installed in the direction of water movement. Accordingly, before buying, pay attention to what thread will be on each end of the pipe.

If there are no arrows on the tap indicating the direction of the liquid, they can be installed on either side. However, even in this case, do not forget about the type of thread at the ends of the pipe, especially if the tap is installed in a tight space.

Tips for installing the crane correctly.

To avoid leaks in the thread areas, it is recommended to use a FUM tape when installing the tap. It must be wound around the entire thread. At the same time, please note that the thickness of the tape to be wound should be such that the tap is twisted with little effort. Thanks to this, you can install the tap in such a way that it will not be afraid of any leaks.

If there is no leakage at the connection points after installing the faucet, but it is difficult to use the faucet in this position, you can Unscrew it by about 45 degrees. The only condition is that it should not hang loose and spin around the pipe.

After the final installation of the tap, you must check again whether there is a leak after opening the water.
